U.S. Government ordered to ban imports of seafood products endangering the Vaquita

On Thursday, the U.S. Court of International of Trade ordered the Trump administration to ban seafood imports from Mexico caught with gillnets that kill the critically endangered vaquita porpoise.  This court decision is a victory in the fight to try save the vaquita, as the Mexican government’s plan to save the species is failing miserably, with the vaquita population now likely numbering less than 15 individuals.  It is hoped that this will result in better enforcement of the gillnet ban, which will not only benefit the vaquita, but many other species of marine wildlife as well.  Safer, sustainable fishing methods are needed not only for marine species, but also for the long-term welfare of local fishermen in Mexico.  Read more:
